• Don't Guess! Fingers vary wildly. Don't assume you know yours or someone else's size.
• Knuckles Rule: Always ensure the ring fits over the knuckle comfortably. A size that fits the base but won't go over the knuckle is useless.
• Width Matters: Wider rings need a larger size than thin rings for the same finger comfort.
• Temperature & Swelling: Avoid sizing when your hands are very cold (fingers shrink) or very hot/swollen (after exercise, salty food, high humidity, pregnancy). Late afternoon is generally best.
• Measure Multiple Times: If DIY-ing, measure 3-4 times for consistency.
• Consider Resizing: Many rings (especially simple bands) can be resized, usually up or down by 1-2 sizes. However:
• Eternity bands (diamonds all around) are very difficult or impossible to resize.
• Certain metals and intricate designs are harder to resize.
• There's always a small risk.

For Surprise Proposals:

• Borrow a Ring: Safest method. Borrow a ring she regularly wears on her ring finger.
• Trace the Inside: Press the ring into soap or clay, or carefully trace the inside circle on paper.
• Enlist Help: Ask her mom, sister, or best friend to casually find out.
• Guess Slightly Larger: If completely stuck, it's often better to go slightly larger (easier to temporarily size down with ring adjusters) than painfully small. The average women's ring size is 6-7 (US), men's is 9-10 (US).
